Chapter 1: The Betrayal

  The System Avatar staggered.

Cracks spread across the smooth white mask of the Faceless Judge. Pale light leaked through the fractures like a dying star.

Yuna tightened her grip on the twin spirit blades in her hands.

  "Now!" someone shouted behind her.

She moved before the echo faded.

Spirit energy surged through her arms as she stepped forward and struck.

Both blades pierced the avatar's chest.

  For a moment nothing happened.

  Then the mask split open.

  Light exploded outward.

The tall robed figure trembled as pieces of its body began to dissolve into glowing fragments.

The endless void around them flickered.

Floating ruins drifted slowly in the darkness. Broken towers, shattered pillars, pieces of floors from the battles they had fought to reach this place.

  Floor one hundred.

  The end of the Tower.

The avatar raised its head slightly. The smooth mask turned toward Yuna.

For a moment she felt as if something far older than the Tower was looking at her.

A calm voice echoed inside the chamber.

  "Candidate confirmed."

  The avatar's body shattered.

The fragments dissolved into light and vanished.

  Silence followed.

No monsters. No alarms. No battle cries.

  Just breathing.

  Someone laughed weakly.

Another person collapsed to the ground.

"We... we did it," a man whispered.

  Yuna lowered her blades.

Her arms felt like stone. Every muscle in her body trembled with exhaustion.

They had climbed through a hundred floors of hell to reach this place.

  Cities that burned.

  Labyrinths filled with monsters.

Worlds that tried to kill them.

So many people had fallen along the way.

But they had reached the end.

For the first time in years, Yuna allowed herself to breathe.

  "It's over," someone said.

A faint blue window appeared in her vision.

Several people stared at the glowing text.

  Victory.

  The word felt unreal.

  Footsteps approached from behind.

  Yuna turned her head slightly.

  Victor Kane walked toward her.

His dark coat was torn in several places, but his posture remained perfectly calm. His expression showed the same quiet confidence he always carried.

  "You did well," he said.

  Yuna gave a tired smile.

  "We all did."

She barely noticed when he stepped closer.

  Pain exploded through her chest.

  Her breath vanished.

  Yuna looked down slowly.

A blade was sticking through her armor.

The tip of the knife had emerged from her chest.

For a moment her mind refused to understand what she was seeing.

  Her hands trembled.

  She turned her head.

  Victor stood behind her.

His hand still held the knife.

  His expression had not changed.

  "Why..." she whispered.

Her knees gave out and she collapsed to the floor.

  Victor knelt beside her.

His voice was quiet enough that only she could hear.

"The Tower belongs to those who understand it."

Yuna tried to speak but blood filled her mouth.

  The void around her blurred.

  Her hearing faded.

Memories began flashing through her mind.

Lily standing in a ruined street, smiling even though the sky was burning above them.

Diego laughing as he slammed his shield against the ground.

  A city in flames.

  Monsters climbing over broken walls.

  People screaming.

  Another memory surfaced.

  A massive gate.

The guardian of Floor ninety nine roaring in fury.

Jin Lee stood alone before it.

His armor was shattered. Blood ran down his arm but he did not move.

Behind him the portal to Floor one hundred shimmered.

He turned and pushed her toward it.

  "You have to go."

  Yuna grabbed his arm.

  "We fight together."

  Jin shook his head.

For once the fearless Dragon Knight looked tired.

"I can only walk with you this far."

  The memory faded.

  The void chamber returned.

  Victor's silhouette stood above her.

The blue system window flickered again.

  Her vision darkened.

  Another line appeared.

  Regression Protocol Activated

The floating ruins around her began dissolving into light.

The endless void fractured like broken glass.

  Yuna could barely think.

  Her last thought was simple.

  Jin.

  The light swallowed everything.

  Then there was nothing.
