Prologue

From an early age, I was taught that fairy tales were true. Monsters exist in our world. They live in the depths of our ocean. They kill people. They drown and eat us. They hunt us for fun, like animals. My country has had to live with them for centuries. Our shores, though beautiful and enticing, are dangerous because of those monsters. Each child is forbidden to go near the water alone. People fear walking the beaches by themselves. Tourists are warned and taught to be afraid. Many governors and leaders promised to rid us of those monsters. They sent out campaigns, spending lots of money to exterminate the threat. Year after year, more of those monsters get caught. But for each one killed, they murder hundreds of us. They don’t speak our language, so we can’t make peace with them. There’s only one way we can protect ourselves: make them extinct.
