The Burnt Sock

Running. We run a lot these days, but then again also not. We hide when we don’t run. That’s why I was so surprised when Mommy stopped running on the road. Numbly, I heard her scream something. The ringing, ringing, ringing in my ears. I know why Mommy stopped running. It’s because I stopped. She had me in her arms, and then I was gone. I stand here, staring at Mr. Bunny. It was really loud; the boom-boom that would go off in the background. Someone was calling my name, but I could only stare at the torn legs and the dirty fur of the bunny Daddy gave me before he left. I wanted to pick it up, but Mommy scooped me up in a hurry. Tears prick my eyes. Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry. I watch as Mr. Bunny becomes smaller and smaller. Daddy told me to be a good girl when he gave me that toy. He told me a lot of things, like how you need to let go and move forward to live a good life. He also told me not to cry. But Daddy never told me why he left. Mommy runs really fast, I can hear her harsh breathing in my ear. Maybe that’s why Mr. Bunny disappeared so fast. The last I see of him is fuzzy. I’m sorry Daddy, I can’t stop crying.
